Chicago’s Asador Bastian Named Best Steakhouse in North America — OH HELL YES!

Asador Bastian in Chicago

Basque-inspired Asador Bastian in Chicago might be one of the hottest reservations in the Midwest after being named the food guide’s #1 pick for Best Steak Restaurant in North America 2025.

Located in River North inside the historic Flair House, built in 1883, this fire-forward dining destination delivers an experience unlike any traditional Chicago steakhouse.

The Experience at Asador Bastian

Upon entry, guests are welcomed downstairs into the basement-level dining space. If you arrive early (highly recommended), ask for a seat at the bar and settle in with a carefully crafted cocktail to set the tone for an indulgent evening.

meat locker

One of the first things you’ll notice is the meat locker, displayed in full view and showcasing premium cuts of beef sourced from around the world. If you’re lucky enough to receive a guided tour inside, take photos and ask questions — learning about each unique cut and the aging process is fascinating.

What Makes Asador Bastian So Unique?

I’ve been fortunate enough to dine here three times — twice at the coveted Chef’s Table with a larger group and once in the dining room with my husband.

The Oven

The Chef’s Table experience allows guests to sample small bites of multiple dishes while gaining insight into how fire and smoke influence nearly every item on the menu. Dining with a group is ideal because it allows you to order several different cuts of beef and compare the nuanced flavor profiles.

There is nothing traditional about this steakhouse.

While polished and incredibly knowledgeable, the staff is refreshingly warm and approachable — a welcome departure from the stiffness often found at other high-end Chicago steakhouses. The sommeliers genuinely enjoy helping guests find wines that complement both their palate and the restaurant’s fire-forward flavors, whether you’re exploring Spanish Riojas or prefer classic European selections.

The team’s enthusiasm for the menu is absolutely contagious.

Must-Haves at Asador Bastian

#1 Your Perfect Steak
The beauty of this menu is its intentional focus on showcasing beef from various regions, highlighting the subtle nuances that define each cut’s flavor profile.

Whether you prefer:
  • The silky, beef-forward richness of the True Galiciana
  • The deep, savory tenderness of the Dry-Aged Holstein
  • The buttery decadence of Akaushi
Each steak is cooked to perfection over live fire and sliced on a platter meant for sharing.

14-year Kagoshima V.V.

On our second Chef’s Table visit, we were offered a 14-year Kagoshima V.V. that quite literally melted in your mouth — one of our guests even shed happy tears. If you ever see that cut available, seize the opportunity.

Kuroge aged in beef tallow

We also sampled an experimental Kuroge aged in beef tallow on our most recent visit. There truly are no words — just immense joy and gratitude.

#2 Turbot al Pil Pil
This turbot melts in your mouth just like the steak. The wood fire gently kisses the fish, while fresh lemon enhances its natural flavor. When seafood is this pristine, the simplicity is perfection.

#3 Anything Featuring Spider Crab
When spider crab meets smoke, something magical happens.
On our last visit, we were treated to an evening special featuring smoked spider crab served warm as a dip with toast points. It was decadent and unforgettable.

The Spider Crab Arroz Cremoso, a regular menu item, is the perfect complement to a rich steak. Served inside the shell for a dramatic tableside presentation, it feels both luxurious and indulgent.

#4 Elevated Starters and Sides
These dishes are designed to be shared.

Black Truffles

  • Black Truffle Beef Tartare – Indulgent yet surprisingly light.
  • Trufa Negra Tortilla Española – A creamy, warm Basque specialty topped with shaved truffle.
  • Bone Marrow Potato Purée – Prepared tableside, the rich marrow adds depth and unctuousness to a classic steakhouse side.
The uniqueness of each dish reinforces that this is not your typical Chicago steakhouse.

#5 Basque Cheesecake
If you’ve made it this far and can manage a few more bites (this is why you bring friends), order the Basque cheesecake.

It’s the perfect ending to an extravagant meal — not overly sweet, light yet satisfying, and beautifully balanced.

Final Thoughts: Is Asador Bastian Worth It?
So many steaks. So little time.

If you’re searching for the best steakhouse in Chicago — or even the best steak restaurant in North America — Asador Bastian absolutely comes in on the top of my list.
