There’s something wonderfully unapologetic about Bob Chinn's Crab House.
The moment you walk in, you know exactly what kind of night you’re about to have—massive seafood platters, tropical cocktails, buzzing dining rooms with seating for 650, and a level of organized chaos that somehow works perfectly.
And yes… the seafood absolutely lives up to the hype.
We came for the famous king crab and fully committed with a 7-pound whole crab feast, complete with bibs, family-style sides, and plenty of melted butter. Before steaming and splitting the crab, the staff even lets you take photos with it—which honestly feels like a rite of passage here.
Opened in 1982, Bob Chinn's Crab House was founded with a simple but ambitious goal: bring the freshest seafood possible to the Midwest. In its early years, the restaurant became known for making daily trips to the airport to personally collect incoming seafood shipments, ensuring guests received seafood at peak freshness.
More than four decades later, Bob Chinn’s remains one of the top-grossing independent restaurants in America and has become a true Chicagoland institution. It is also one of the few restaurants in the area where guests can still order an entire king crab for the table—adding to the larger-than-life dining experience that has made it famous for generations.
The experience starts immediately at the entrance with live lobster tanks and the unmistakable energy of a restaurant that has been dishing out thousands of pounds of seafood weekly for decades. The dining room is enormous—seating hundreds, maybe thousands—and yet somehow every table still feels like part of the party.
A few standout favorites:
🦀 the king crab, incredibly fresh and sweet
🥖 the legendary garlic rolls (always worth the hype)
🌶️ calamari with just enough heat from peppers
🍹 the famous mai tais sold by the pitcher, which practically demand a second round, to wash down the second round of garlic rolls of course!
🥬 surprisingly addictive family-style coleslaw and potatoes
Is it a little kitschy? Absolutely.
But that’s part of the charm.
Bob Chinn’s isn’t trying to be trendy or minimalist. It’s a classic Midwest seafood institution—and honestly, the over-the-top ambiance makes the experience even more memorable.
Perfect for date nights, birthdays, or a fun night out with friends where dinner feels more like an event than just a meal.
